I'm a Montreal based research scientist with about 14 years of lab experience (at the time of writing this), both in Scotland, and for the last few years, in Canada.
Why a science blog? There are a couple of reasons. Firstly, I have been a blogger for the last few years on my personal blog, which contains nothing much more than an account of my holidays, and more recently, pictures of my kids for folks that live too far away to see them as often as they might like. However, in the last year or so, I have been looking at blogging as more than that.
Lab science can be an unstable line of work at best, so it is always good to be on the lookout for ways to transfer one's skills to other fields. To this end I have been looking at technical/scientific writing, and or editing as something I could turn my hand to. This blog will serve as a means to keeping the writing skills honed.
The secondpush that made me start this blog was the book Bad Science by Dr Ben Goldacre. I had been following Goldacre's blog on this subject for quite a while, but it took me a time to get round to reading the book (if you haven't yet, stop what you're doing and go rectify that). Anyway, the last chapter had a rather stirring little speech about what we could do to help ensure that Bad Science is displaced by Good science (I paraphrase). Blogging by those in the know, to help disseminate good science was one way, and a way in which I could personally participate in the conversation.
So here we are. Welcome to my new blog.
